(January 25, Shanghai)Ms. Barbara N. McKee, Director
of office of Clean Energy Collaboration, Department
of E nergy, USA, accompanied by Dr. S. T. Hsieh,
managing Director of EETC (The Us/China Energy and
Environmental Technology Center ), visits the Pudong
new district, Shanghai, PRC on Jan 24 and 25, 2007,
for an inspection of the e-bus demonstration
project. Dr. Haitao Ding, vice president of the
Shanghai Pudong Association for Science Technology (SPAST),
receives the US delegation on be half of the Pudong
New District Government.
Dr. Ting states that the Pudong New District
Government attaches importance to the environmental
protection and the development of clean energy; one
example is that it was rewarded the “City Star of
the National Environmental Protection”. During the
“11th Five-Year Plan”, it has become the mission of Pudong to promote recycle economy and to crank up
the source-saving resource-conserving and
environmental-friendly community. The visiting of
DOE officials and EETC officers will help promote
the international collaboration, and the
informational exchange of environmental protection
and utilization of clean energy.
Dr. Ting emphasizes on the government’s initiative
in the e-bus demonstration project that is to
involve Powerzinc Shanghai and several other foreign
companies. This project is to build the strategic
alliance among the involved parties and to expect
the support from the US.
Ms. McKee pays warm tribute to the visionary
strategy and the practical endeavors of the Pudong
New District Government in support of the cause of
clean energy, especially the Us-China collaboration
in e-bus demonstration project. She also introduces
some approaches that have been taken by the US
government in the area of developing clean energy
and forming the policies.
Dr. Hsieh says that EETC, the agency established in
1997 by the USDOE and Chinese Mini stry of Science
and technology. EETC has since been dedicated to
promoting the cause of clean energy and the
technology exchange between China. He in particular
points out that he has a thorough understanding
about Zinc-Air fuel cell, which is a very feasible
and economic clean energy technology.
The visitors made a tour in Powerzinc and
debriefed a report by Richard Yang, the CEO of
Powerzinc, regarding the company’s involvement in
the e-bus project. Visitors admired on the
achievements accomplished by Powerzinc and wished the
success of the e-bus project; they were also invited
to board the prototype zinc-air fuel cell bus
manufactured
by Powerzinc during the tour.
It is said that Pudong government has taken a
pragmatic approach to develop clean energy. Although
they have demonstrated the ultra-capacitor city bus
and kept an eye for the development of hydrogen fuel
cell. Today, they have realized that zinc-air fuel
cell bus project may be the most feasible project,
given the tight spot brought by the 2010 Shanghai
World Expo. They have also realized that zinc-air
fuel cell technology may be among one of the most
economic, reliable and secure technologies. They
came to this conclusion after conducting an
half-year
investigation on Powerzinc and after
collecting the expert opinions, including the
endorsement from academicians from the Chinese
Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of
Engineering, the professors from top universities,
the scientists from top institutions, and the
foreign experts from the US and Canada.
