Joint Research Project with Car Manufacturer Showed
Promising Future of Powerzinc¡¯s Zinc Air Fuel Cells
¡¡

August 7, 2003

As a result of a joint research project with Powerzinc, the world-renowned Japanese automotive company has recently shown to Powerzinc its test result of various battery technologies & zinc air fuel cell for the electric vehicles applications. The test compared the key performance attributes of Lithium-ion battery, Lithium-polymer battery, and Powerzinc¡¯s DQFC zinc-air fuel cell at various conditions. Here are some highlights from the report:

¡¤ Powerzinc¡¯s zinc air fuel cell has substantially higher specific energy at 220Wh/kg
At the room temperature of 25oC degree, the specific energy of Lithium Ion battery was 97.3Wh/kg, Lithium Polymer battery was 77.8Wh/kg, and Powerzinc¡¯s DQFC was the highest at 220Wh/kg (which was even higher than Powerzinc¡¯s published 200Wh/kg data).

¡¤ Powerzinc¡¯s zinc air fuel cell has much superior low temperature performance
The test also measured the variations of internal resistance over a wide temperature range from -30oC to 45oC. Under the temperature of -30oC, the internal resistance of DQFC increased only two times, while that of Lithium-ion battery increased 7-times and Lithium-polymer battery increased 8-times. Low temperature performance is a very important criterion for electric vehicles. According to electric vehicle design standard, an increase of 7 ¨C 8 times of internal resistance at low temperature is definitely outside the acceptable range, while an increase of 2-times can satisfy the design requirements.

¡¤ Powerzinc¡¯s zinc air fuel cell has achieved lower cost per KWh
The current cost of Li-ion battery is US$1140/KWh and is projected to come down to US$360/Kwh in long-term. However, the current cost of Powerzinc¡¯s DQFC is only US$100/KWh and is projected to come down to US$50/KWh in the future.

The conclusion of this phase of study is that Powerzinc¡¯s DQFC has successfully demonstrated its superior performance over Li-ion and Li-polymer in many areas and has the potential to be the candidate of choice for pure electric vehicles.
